Hiroshima

Okonomiyaki

We stopped for the local specialty in Hiroshima — Okonomiyaki. It’s a cabbage, noodle and egg pancake covered in a special sauce.

A-Bomb Dome & Hiroshima Peace Park

The Hiroshima Peace Park is a monument to those killed by the atomic bomb. The park is built across the river from the Genbaku (A-Bomb) Dome, one of the only buildings left standing after the bomb. The park was an extremely somber place, yet the monuments were beautiful and each conveyed a message of hope, peace, and a plea for the destruction of all atomic weapons.

Hiroshima Castle

The original Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic bombing. We visited the replica of the castle that was finished in the 1960s.

Shukkeien Gardens

The original Shukkeien Gardens was also destroyed by the atomic bomb, but masterfully recreated. The garden was beautiful. The pond was filled with koi and turtles — one particular fish loved jumping out of the water!

My thoughts on Okonomiyaki…”call me old fashioned, but I think I’m going to stick with maple syrup…”

The Hiroshima Peace Park looks absolutely beautiful. The Genbaku Dome is absolutely chilling, even in photos. I can only imagine what it must be like to be standing right there next to it.

Thank you so much for this blog…I really almost feel like I’m traveling while I read and look at the pictures. I am learning some things that I did not know and it is fascinating.

The “Buff Face” is a cool pic!

    I love that buff face!

    Love you,
    Aunt Anne
